Grant sent this letter from his “Summer White House” in Long Branch, NJ dated 2 days after the 4th of July 1875. In this partial letter Grant writes to his friend John Long who managed his farm in St. In the letter Grant arranges a visit to St. Louis and approves a lease agreement of his White Haven farm. 1875 was an important year for Grant as he signed landmark legislation including The Civil Rights Act of 1875. The law prohibited racial discrimination in public places and facilities such as restaurants and public transportation.
