Recently obtained in a trade with an upscale collector from my home state of Rhode Island I’ve known for decades, this is a phenomenal Cassius Clay signature, originally acquired from the new Champ the day before the boxing legend changed his name to the more famous and well known, Muhammad Ali. This large autograph of the 22 year old Clay was done with a blue ball-point pen on a AP photographer’s envelope, which measures 7.5 x 4.25. It is housed in a clean PSA holder, with a Mint 9 grade. Original recipient of this artifact was AP photographer David Pickoff, who dated the signature underneath 3-5-64. This was nine days after Clay beat Sonny Liston in Miami Beach and captured the Heavyweight title. On March 6, 1964, Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad officially gave Cassius Clay the name “Muhammad Ali”. Scan above shows envelope in PSA holder, graded a 9 and shots of the autograph before it was sent to PSA for grading, photos taken in July of 2016. You often see the word “rare” used frequently in Muhammad Ali autograph listings. Muhammad Ali autographs ARE NOT RARE. He signed many thousands of free autographs BEFORE he started doing private signings and card shows. 1960 to 1964 “Cassius Clay” autographs ARE RARE. And the precise dating of this example one day before the changing of his “slave name” makes it all the more desirable.
