Deserving of the Best Collection! The Three Stooges were a beloved vaudeville and comedy act best known for their short subject films. Their careers began in the 1920s and ran until the late 1960s, with their popularity continuing to the present day. Amazingly, since they first appeared on television in 1958, their original shorts have never left the airwaves. The Stooges are synonymous with over-the-top, highly physical slapstick comedy and have remained wildly popular. The group began on the vaudeville stage as “sidekicks” to Ted Healy the original composition was Moe Howard, his brother Shemp Howard, and Larry Fine. Shemp soon left the group to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by his brother, Curly Howard. This incarnation to many people the ultimate ensemble was the first to be called The Three Stooges. In 1934, the trio began their appearance in wildly two-reel comedy short subjects for Columbia Pictures. Their escapades continued until Curly suffered a debilitating stroke in 1946, prompting Shemp’s reluctant return to the line-up. Shemp stayed a Stooge until his death from a heart attack in 1955. Actor Joe Besser was recruited to keep the franchise alive but was replaced by “Curly-Joe” DeRita in 1958. In addition to live performance, the Moe-Larry-Curly Joe incarnation made a series of films between 1959 to 1965 that included. Have Rocket, Will Travel. The Three Stooges Meet Hercules.
